Insomnia is a type of sleep disorder that is characterised by individuals having difficulty falling asleep, maintaining asleep or early-morning awakening with inability to return to sleep. Insomnia disorder typically occurs at least three times per week over a duration of at least three months.
These sleep disturbances can impact one’s quality of life as it may result in irritability, poor focus and concentration, memory problems, problems in coordination, frequent headaches and fatigue, while also increasing risk for depression and anxiety. For many with insomnia disorder, these symptoms often lead to significant distress and impairment in social, occupational or other areas of functioning.
